What is “Verified by Intel”?
“Verified by Intel®” is a collaboration between Intel and three major notebook suppliers (ODMs).
The notebook barebones provided by Quanta, ASmobil and Compal have been verified by Intel for interchangeability across seven common building blocks: Hard disk drives, optical disk drives, keyboards, batteries, LCD screens, customizable notebook panels and AC adapters.
“Verified by Intel” FQAs
Are these systems designed or built by Intel?
No. These are ODM products which are built and sold by each individual ODM
What are the common building blocks? The seven common building blocks for the Intel® interchangeability initiative are: battery pack, optical disk drive, hard disk drive, customizable notebook panel (aka “modular ID”), keyboard, AC adapter, and LCD panel.
What is Intel doing to encourage component availability? Intel is working with the common building block suppliers and distributors to encourage availability of these components. To jumpstart availability, Intel will be stocking shop.intel.com with components that will be available for ordering (in selected countries only). The exceptions are HDD, LCD panel and customizable notebook panels. Hard disk drives are currently available to the Channel through regular distribution channels. Customizable notebook panels will be available directly from vendors. LCDs are currently not upgradeable or serviceable in the Channel.
Will Intel be doing any quality testing of these components? Suppliers participating in the Intel® interchangeability initiative are world-class companies who understand competitive quality standards. Intel is encouraging interchangeability through three steps:
- Components are designed and verified for spec-compliance. - Notebooks are designed to use the full set of spec-compliant components. - Notebooks are verified for interchangeability with the full set of spec-compliant components.
Who are the participating component suppliers? The last year has seen a dramatic increase in the availability of components supporting interchangeability. World-class suppliers are now producing a robust range of components across all 7 component categories:
- Hard disk drive: Fujitsu*, Hitachi*, Seagate* - Optical disk drive: Panasonic*, LiteON*, QSI* - # Battery: Celxpert*, Dynapack*, Simplo* - Customizable notebook panel: Brady*, Fed Ex Kinkos*, Worldmark* - AC adapter: Delta* - Keyboard: Sunrex*
What does “Verified by Intel®” mean? Intel is working individually with ASmobil, Quanta, and Compal to facilitate compatibility and interchangeability testing of the common building blocks as well as putting in place manufacturing quality tests. In order for a barebones notebook to further qualify for the “Verified by Intel” designation, it must not only meet Intel's specifications for component interchangeability; it must in addition pass Intel's “mobility vectors” testing; meet Intel's requirements for providing a suitable “out of box experience” for the reseller; and qualify for and incorporate front-line post-sales support from Intel. The hardware vendors of the barebone notebooks and the interchangeable components remain solely responsible for the design, sale and functionality of their respective products, including any liability arising from product infringement and product warranty. Intel is not warranting the products of the hardware vendors.
